    This report is based upon the short story “The Last Leaf” written by O. Henry. This short story was published in his collection The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories and was copyrighted 1907 by O. Henry.

    Introduction of the Author
    O. Henry (pseudonym for William Sydney Porter) was born on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina; and he became famous for his short stories, which have been collected into a number of books. The first collection of his stories appeared in 1904 in "Cabbages and Kings," which was immediately popular. Other collections followed, including: "The Four Million" (1906), "The Trimmed Lamp" (1907), "The Heart of the West" (1907), "Whirligigs" (1910), "Sixes And Sevens" (1911), "Rolling Stones" (1912), and "Waifs And Strays" (1917).

    Introduction of the story
    This story took place in the studio apartment of two young female painters who live together in Greenwich Village, in New York City. The place is very famous because of many artists lived there and also the low rent on the apartments and nice atmosphere.
    The main characters of the story are Sue and Johnsy. They are an artist and be a friends for long time. Both of them are very interested about art. Sue is from the State of Maine. She draws pictures for stories in magazines. Her characteristic is very friendly and charitable. Then, Johnsy is from California. She has a dream that she looks forward to go to Italy and painting a picture of the Bay of Naples. In the first time Johnsy is very pessimistic person. However, she changes to be optimistic person after getting a motivation from Sue.

    Summary
    In December, it was very cold in New York. Snow fell and there was ice in the ground. Many people in the city became ill. The illness was called pneumonia. One of them was Johnsy, she had pneumonia. A doctor had already tried to cure her illness but he could not do anything and Johnsy was not getting better. One day, Sue looked in on Johnsy condition by visiting her room. Suddenly Sue heard quiet sound from Johnsy’s bed direction. She found Johnsy was counting vine leaves outside the window. Johnsy said that the last falling leaf will become the end of her life. Looking at that condition Sue as her best friend gave motivation directly. Sue said that Johnsy had to be strong and optimistic in order to make the illness disappeared. However, Johnsy still grumbled about that. Finally, Sue asked her to close her eyes and go to bed.
    In the apartment also lived a old people named Behrman. He lived in the downstairs. He was also an artist who wanted to paint a masterpiece. Sue told everything about Johnsy condition and the vine leaves to him. After hearing her story he was angry but he loved the two young artists very much. In the morning, Johnsy found the last leaf was still there all day long. She became aware and the case had taught the lesson to her. Sue told her about Mr. Behrman, he had pneumonia too and he died this morning. Someday, it was found that the last leaf in the vine is Mr. Behrman’s masterpiece. He painted it on the night of the strom.

    Conclusion

    This story is full of friendship values. The author wrote the story in order to show to the reader how life should be did. Then, the author also tried to achieve the attention of the reader in the story. I think he was getting on achieving the point. The author also used easy writing style in the story so that it makes the reader understand the whole meaning of the story easily and clearly. Overall this story is really recommended for you who want to increase optimistic sense.
